Photographer Brett Lloyd shot this portrait of actor Sam Riley here a couple of years ago for AnOther Man. Brett's work is so good - I'll dig out some more and post that too asap.
London's best new agency, The Book Agency, have just re-launched their website and there's loads of awesome work on there by Recession Studio regulars Jeff Hahn, Justin Borbely, Kim Howells and Nicole & Danielle. Below are a couple of photos from Justin's recent lookbook shoot for Maria Francesca Pepe, styled by Pandora Lennard.
Just found these pictures photographer Jack Symes shot behind the scenes at a Sserpress video shoot here last Summer. I really loved director Gabriel Pryce's stripped back, simple set. The chimp on toilet with cigar poster was a nice touch.
Photographer Jessie Lily Adams has been shooting a lot here for Lula Magazine over the last year or so. Here are some spreads from a beauty story Jessie shot with Edie Campbell for Issue 14.
The lovely guys from LULS are in the studio again today shooting their third video with Ferry Gouw. Check out the first two, both shot here in the last few months...
Little Mix have been in the studio a couple of times this summer. This spread from the latest issue of Rollacoaster Magazine was shot by Justin Borbely back in August. To read the feature and the rest of Issue 6, just visit rollacoaster.tv!
Cooler magazine have been shooting some of their covers and lots of editorial here these last couple of years. I really love this little film by Diane Sagnier, which she shot when the team were here recently working on a swim-wear story. Styling by Poppy Smith, and hair and make-up by Bea Sweet.
Some more work from the amazing Leon Mark, this time for the latest issue of Rika Magazine. Previous issues of the magazine are available to download from their website - rikaint.com/magazine.
As well as Marked Man, which previewed their A/W 2012 collection, Sibling also had their previous S/S collection shot here last year. Hotdog was directed by Yuko Kondo and Jan Urbanowski, and the first minute or so of the semi-animated short provides a (slightly surreal!) mini-tour of the studio. The film is up on Vimeo - click here to watch or go to http://vimeo.com/29599002/
Directors Sam Renwick and Thomas Bryant were in the studio shooting this earlier in the month. Marked Man is a short film commissioned by knitwear label Sibling to be shown at their Menswear show at London Fashion Week last Wednesday. Dazed Digital premiered the film online on Friday and did a little write up too, which you can read by clicking here!
Fashion photographer Leon Mark has shot a number of stories here over the past few months, including ones for Commons & Sense, Dossier Journal and Sleek magazine. These photos feature in the Autumn/Winter 11 issue Sleek.
A couple more of Bella Howard's pics, this time from her aforementioned shoot for NYC jewellery company Lulu Frost. Valentine Fillol Cordier (below with Boris) styled the shoot, and Portia Freeman, Anna Brewster, Mary Charteris and Suki Waterhouse modelled. (Mega babe central.)
Here's a couple of super cute polaroids from photographer Bella Howard's shoot here with Nicole Pussycat Doll for Wonderland magazine. Bella's also shot here for Nylon and Cooler and a lookbook for Lulu Frost. As well as her website bellahoward.co.uk, check out her mega blog bybellazine.blogspot.com!
Some more Ferry Gouw for you all. This was shot in the studio back in October for musician Gabriel Bruce's debut single. Sleep Paralysis is out now and the album is due to follow a little later this year...
The Times took over the studio for three days last week, shooting their Watch Special. Here's the cover of the supplement which was out yesterday. Art direction by Peta Bell and photography by Gregory Mild.
Coinciding with the end of their 'month of chromophilia', Leisure held a one night only art show here a couple of weeks ago. Curator Rhys Coren interviewed artists Jack Bechtler and Lewis Teague Wright and did a little write up, which you can view by clicking here. Check out a few more pictures from the night below...
Leisure are here again tomorrow for another one night only art show, entitled Perfidious Gleam. Artists Jack Bechtler and Lewis Teague Wright will be exhibiting an installation examining the refraction of light, made using industrial objects and materials. Taking place 7pm–10pm tomorrow, Thursday 13th October here at the studio. Click here for address details, or click here to see the event on Facebook.
Mass is a series of shows curated by Jess Bernard and Esther Theaker, in association with Leisure. The first event marks the release of Project Nim, with seven emerging artists showing work made in response to the film. Video, photography and painting by Roseena Hussain, Seren Jones, Margarita Louca, Carl Magalit, Bronwen Parker–Rhodes, Ted Pearce, and Polly Philp, will be exhibited at this one night only show. Please join us 7pm–10pm next Thursday 4th August here at Recession Studio. Click here for address details, or click here to see the event on Facebook.
Ferry Gouw was back here the other month, shooting this video for Tom Vek. Tom's new album Leisure Seizure was released a couple of weeks ago and has been playing pretty much non-stop on the studio stereo since...
Speaking of Ben Rayner, here are a few snaps from the Rayner Books launch party we held here back in December. Rayner books is Ben's independent publishing company specialising in short-run art books. As well as his own work, Ben has so far published books by Sandy Kim, Karley Sciortino and Simon Taylor-Davies.
Vice recently celebrated their 100th issue by shooting 100 cool girls from various European cities. Photographer Ben Rayner shot lots of the London girls at Recession Studio. See the entire feature by clicking here, plus 20 hot boys Ben also shot by clicking here!
Gabriel Green shot this Wavves cover feature for Loud And Quiet last summer. It was one of the last shoots at the old studio, and I love that these photos show it a bit more like a location. I also love that it's Wavves, because they're wicked. Below is the cover and a couple of spreads from the magazine, and also a couple of Gabriel's unpublished photos.
MTV VMA nominated director Ferry Gouw shot this video for Mercury Music Prize nominated Villagers at our old Whitechapel abode. Ferry does lots of green-screen based work here and I'll be posting a couple more newer vids of his in the next few days.
Back Yard Recordings have been using the studio for lots of their artists' photo shoots and video shoots over the years. Art director and illustrator Jayne Helliwell shot a couple of those videos, including this one for Hounds Of Hate. Jayne was tragically killed last year in a road accident. She is a dearly missed friend.
Here are a few tear-sheets from another of my fave Vice shoots. This one was shot by photographer David Titlow and styled by Mischa Notcutt. Vice Editor-in-Chief and overlord-in-general Andy Capper was in attendance on this one advising on the finer nuances of Riot Grrl. Big <3 to Andy not only for this, but also for his huge support for the studio over the last couple of years.
A couple of years ago, XL Recordings came over with The xx to shoot their video for Crystalised. Directed by Alex Flick and Masato Riesser and art directed by Arthur De Borman, the video has currently had over 12 million Youtube views and counting. It was also one of the nicest shoots ever with a lovely team, amazing band, and a celebratory Tayyabs afterwards (thanks Caius)!
Over the past couple of years, Vice have been been shooting here pretty regularly. Below are a couple of my favourite shoots from the old Whitechapel studio. Both were shot by photographer Claudia Grassl, art directed by Tabitha Denholm and styled by Aldene Johnson. Aldene is currently flying all over the world styling the incredible Florence And The Machine, and Tabitha has co-directed a few of Florence's videos, alongside photographer Tom Beard. Tom also shot the additional landscape photography for the All At Sea story.
Back in early 2008, the guys at Adventures Close To Home Recordings booked the studio to shoot this video for Stricken City's first single. Below are a few stills from the vid and a couple of pictures from the set too.
